5 Valuable Types of Blog Posts You Can Publish Today

Connect, engage, and sell with high-value and easy-to-share SEO-optimized content.

Blogs are a powerful way to connect with your target audience while sharing your expertise on a topic, far and wide. With a consistent blogging strategy, like publishing different types of blog posts, you have lots of content to repurpose and reshare while promoting your business year-round.

Although short-form content, like 20-second videos, is popular, there’s only so much you can share in that little time. But a blog post? The possibilities are endless.

The amount of marketing platforms to choose from is overwhelming! There’s Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, TikTok, YouTube, and it goes on… But you don’t have to learn them all and be everywhere! Instead, you can confidently invest in your blog because it’s a marketing tool that’s simple to use and here to stay.

What does the future of blogging hold? We know that writing high-value content is still relevant and essential for every online business, but is it worth it in the long term?

HubSpot, a marketing and sales software leader, found that despite Gen Z’s preference for social search, “consumers say search engines are still the best way to get information.” So, yes, the future of blogging still looks bright!

But what if social search dominates? If that happens, I’d personally be relieved to have lots of blog content that I can quickly repurpose into social media posts. And a blog that’s still ranking in search results! 😉

Speaking of search, Statista’s study below shows that search engines are still going strong, and Google has kept the lion’s share of the search market worldwide. So why not keep going with your SEO-optimized blogging plans?

Publishing different posts helps your website rank higher in search results, which makes it easy for your target audience to find you and take the next step — for example, signing up for your email list.

If you want to grow your email list, that’s great news! Businesses that blog see twice as much email traffic.

In this article, you'll learn how different types of blog posts help your business get seen in search results and beyond. Get ready to connect with more right-fit clients with less time, money, and effort spent on marketing!

5 Valuable Types of Blog Posts You Can Publish Today

  1. The Pillar Page post

  2. The “How To” post

  3. The List (or Listicle) post

  4. The Newsworthy post

  5. The Case Study post

There are many ways to share your expertise via your blog but know that one type of post doesn't necessarily rank higher over another. Securing a spot on the first page of a search engine results page (SERP) is a combination of many factors — not just the type of blog post you publish.

You need a keyword strategy and high-value, easy-to-read content to get more eyes on your blog. (For a complete list of what makes a blog post SEO-friendly, don’t forget to download my FREE Blog SEO checklist!)

1. The Pillar Page Post

Example: “The Ultimate Guide to Luxury Travel Experiences”

Pillar page posts go in-depth on a topic. And they're especially great for linking internal content, like related blog posts. You can include links to your other content when the post has lots of must-know details. Internal linking is an easy way to expand on the topic while keeping readers engaged on your site.

Quick Facts:

  • The ideal length of a Pillar Page post is 2,000 - 5,000 words.

  • They're great for deep dives into a subject that showcases your expertise.

  • They rank well because of their comprehensiveness, authority, and links to supporting posts.

Tip! Since Pillar Page posts are text-heavy, add visual elements, like charts, infographics, images, or videos. Visuals like these make the content easier to read and engaging.

2. The “How To” Post

Example: “How to Write an Effective Welcome Email Sequence: A Step-by-Step Guide

“How to” posts share steps to address a need or fix a common problem your readers experience. These posts can be simple and to the point, detailed long-form posts, or anything in between. The length and depth depend on the subject and how much you want to cover.

Remember that the more detailed you go (and the more value you give), the more likely people are to share your post. Longer “how to” posts with exact steps help readers know you're the expert. And that's always a good thing.

Quick Facts:

  • The ideal length of a "How to" post is 1,500 - 3,000 words.

  • They're great for showing step-by-step instructions to complete a goal or task.

  • They rank well because of their usefulness and actionable advice.

Tip! “How to” posts can rank for Google’s featured snippet spot. This top spot is the result that shows up first in Google and answers the question a user searches. Below is an example with tips on ranking for this #1 spot!

3. The List (“Listicle”) Post

Example: “5 Valuable Types of Blog Posts You Can Publish Today” 😉

List posts are one of the most engaging types of articles to read. They include real examples, relevant data, and tips your target audience needs to know.

Quick Facts:

  • The ideal length of a Listicle is 1,000 - 2,500 words.

  • They're great for sharing information in a digestible, easy-to-read format.

  • They rank well because they're easy to read/scan, and share.

Tip! Play with the number of items you list for your article, but use at least three since one or two items don't make a complete list. Use odd numbers, like 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11.  Word has it that odd numbers do better than posts with even numbers, which could be because a list of odd numbers seems more believable than a list of even ones. Still, Top 10 lists are always popular and get lots of shares!

4. The Newsworthy Post

Example: “Insider Insights: What Small Business Owners Need to Know About Filing Taxes in 2024”

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! The Newsworthy post rides the wave of a current event that directly impacts your target audience. They're especially great for sharing on social media, where people are already talking about current events.

Quick Facts:

  • The ideal length of a Newsworthy post depends on how in-depth the topic is and the details available. Aim for a minimum of 1,000 words.

  • They're great for sharing highly-searched current events, industry news, and trending topics.

  • They rank well because of their timeliness and credibility.

Tip! Did you miss a breaking news story you want to cover on your blog? You can still publish content about it! Be sure to include your take on the future impact of the news and what people can do now.

5. The Case Study Post

Example: “How ABC Company Increased Conversions by 278% with an SEO-Optimized Website”

Case Study posts showcase the results your clients achieved after working with you. These posts detail a client’s pain points and the solution you provide while spotlighting the project's successful outcome. Add a testimonial or two, and you’ve got a post that’s also big for boosting your credibility!

Quick Facts:

  • The ideal length of a Case Study Post is 1,500 - 3,000 words. But, it varies depending on how in-depth the case study goes into the problem, solution, and outcome.

  • They're great for sharing an insider take on what makes working with you successful.

  • They rank well because they share real-life examples and data-driven details.

Tip! When spotlighting a client’s success story, share the next steps a reader can take. Include a call to action so readers can easily book a call or download a lead magnet and take the next step toward working with you.
