Is Blogging Still Relevant? 7 Reasons to Start a Blog
To blog or not to blog…
Blogging is dead.
Blogging takes too long.
No one reads blogs anymore.
You may have already heard this (and more), but… is blogging still relevant or not?
Yes! Your blog is a powerful marketing tool. With a solid strategy, you can use it to bring more of your ideal clients to your website so they can take the next step toward working with you.
People still read blogs. And bloggers are still making money, especially those offering high-value and actionable content.
Before we dive into the benefits of blogging and some compelling reasons to start a blog, let’s take a quick trip back in time. Remember the nostalgic blogging platform LiveJournal? Circa 2000, I used my now-destructed LiveJournal blog to keep up with friends and archive the setlists I played on KTRU Rice Radio.
Today, blogging has gone far beyond its humble beginnings as a place to socialize without leaving the house. Blogs are now part of a global library of searchable resources for nearly anyone, anywhere, anytime.
As of 2024, there are over 600 million blogs on 1.9 billion websites and more than two billion blog posts published annually. That’s a lot of content! Interestingly enough, according to DemandSafe, 82% of websites are inactive (so no need to fret about the competition!).
Your blog can rank high in search engines while doing the heavy lifting for your marketing. It just takes the right strategy backed by tried-and-true techniques and some creative thinking,

A successful blog is how your ideal clients find you — and know, like, and trust you enough to buy from you. They just have to find you online first.

Things to consider before you invest 100+ hours into social media marketing:
When you upload content to social media platforms, you agree to license your content to them. And they can do what they want with your content. These terms are in Facebook’s terms of service (Section 3.3: The permissions you give us). Do you still own the content you publish on social media? To find out, check the terms of service for all platforms where you upload your content.
Social media posts disappear, sometimes mysteriously. Since uploaded content is licensed to these platforms, they control who sees what and when. That means if the content you post disagrees with their policies, your account could be closed and all your hard work deleted (make sure to back everything up!).
Get found on search engines for years to come. A post from past years on Instagram doesn’t appear in search engines, but your blog could be the first search result on Google for a very long time. This means you get new clicks to your website and engagement while you sleep.

Is blogging still relevant? 7 reasons to start a blog:
You own your blog, which means you control the content you publish. Unlike social media, there's zero risk of getting shadow-banned or blocked. (Heads up, no matter where you post content, it’s best to keep it backed up. The easiest way to do this is by having your work saved in Word, Google Docs, or Asana.)
You create brand visibility. Whether once a week or once a month, publishing high-quality content helps you rank high on search engines like Google. You also get to rank for keywords that align with your brand. For example, I use keywords like “SEO copywriting” and “SEO content” so that people associate my brand with these terms.
Your blog is the best way to share valuable information. The curated content hub you create showcases your expertise and positions you as a leader in your industry.
Blogs are a great way to repurpose content. Start with a blog post. Then, from there, you can create…
many social media posts
a podcast episode
a YouTube video
an infographic
a newsletter
a checklist
a webinar
a course
Easily share your content. A blog post is easier to share than a social media post. Despite how it may seem, not everyone uses social media. If you share an Instagram post with someone who doesn't have an account, they may not be able to see it. But, all internet users can access public-facing content shared on a website.
Enjoy affiliate marketing. When done right, affiliate income can make up a big chunk of your revenue. Use this strategy when you recommend products or services that you’ve tried and trust.
There’s power in sustainability. Your blog can work well for years. Readers (and potential buyers) can find your content on search engines as long as it’s published.
