How to Write Your About Page Bio (With a 9-Question Framework)
Write a Compelling About Me Page Bio — Quickly and Easily
When you visit a website for the first time, what pages do you go to first?
Most people land on the Home page, and if their interest is piqued, they go straight to the About page — making it the second most visited page on a website.
So when a friend asked me if I could share some tips to help her with her About page bio, I jumped right in.
I often hear, "Writing my bio is taking so long. I want it to sound like me, but it doesn't."
Sound familiar?
Before I learned the framework I'm sharing with you, I found it challenging to write about a subject I'm super close to… ME.
Writing your About page bio doesn’t have to be hard or take forever — start with nine easy-to-answer questions and see it as the start of a conversation (not a lengthy monologue).
Want a professional copywriter’s eyes on your bio? Book a content audit and get custom feedback so you have a bio that tells your story and answers your target market’s big question, “What’s in it for me?”
In this post, you'll learn how to write a good About Me page bio that you're excited to publish and share.
Like my friend, you'll want to start by writing a first draft.
Don't worry about how it sounds, whether it fits into a framework, or the word count just yet.
Write.
The first draft is the warm-up — just like stretching before going for a run, we need to warm up those writing muscles, too.
And the first draft is where you let all your big ideas spill out onto the page.
This is the part where you can forget about correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation — for now, at least.
Just enjoy writing.
(Side note: First drafts have become a much-loved part of my writing process. Do you love this freestyle writing session, too?)
Nine Questions to Ask Yourself for the Perfect About Me Bio
Staring at a blank Google doc and hoping a masterpiece emerges is one way to do it.
But I find that way takes much longer.
Enter: The glorious framework.
I start with nine questions to guide the bio-writing process.
This way, it's not taking 3+ hours to share my business story and how I help clients.
In a few short paragraphs, readers should have enough information so they build trust and take action by booking a call with you or subscribing to your newsletter.
The Know, Like, Trust factor… it's a big deal, and a good About Me bio helps.
Start here:
What's your name?*
What do you do, and who do you do it for?
What's the biggest benefit of your work? What wins are your clients experiencing?
What led you here? What moment sparked this journey?
What do you love most about your work?
What's at least one professional accomplishment/certification you've achieved?
What are your hobbies and interests? Do you have any pets? Any favorite place you like to travel to?
What's one random fact about you? Favorite food? Awesome place to visit? Best hiking trail?
What would you like the reader to do next (aka your call-to-action)? Examples: Book a call, enroll in your course, subscribe to your newsletter, or share with a friend.
*Super obvious, I know, but don’t forget this one!
Once you've answered these questions, combine your answers and edit them to fit together into fluid paragraphs — like a letter you're writing to a friend.
If it feels clunky, you can add transitional phrases, like "That's when I realized…," "which led me to…," "I know this because," or "you must be wondering…"
Keep it light and conversational.
That applies whether you're writing in the first or third person (a purely personal choice).
Now that your writing wheels are spinning, save the following tips to polish your bio before you publish it.
About Me Page Bio: Writing Tips
What's in it for me?
As much as your About Me bio is… about you, your reader will always ask, "What's in it for me?"
They want to know about you and how you can make their lives easier.
After all, since they're wondering whether to invest in your offer, it's only natural they ask themselves, "What's in it for me?" when reading any copy on your website and across your marketing.
Add a photo of yourself.
People are reading your About page to form a connection with you, and images build trust.
You don’t have to have a professional headshot but do include a photo of yourself.
Keep it brief.
Readers should be able to skim your bio and get the essential details you want them to know about you.
Write in short paragraphs and sentences.
Bold key text.
And add headers where it fits.
Include a call to action.
Calls-to-action invite people to stay engaged in your work and content.
They are the answers to the question, "What do I want someone to do next?" — like read a related blog post or click over to your services page.
Every page on your website should have a call to action.
Final Thoughts
Nine questions… a simple framework. That’s all it takes.
A compelling About Me bio lets the reader know what you do and who you do it for — while showcasing relevant highlights that help them build trust with you.
Your bio is why a potential client trusts you over a service provider who missed this opportunity to connect with their readers.
So, how did my friend's bio turn out?
The feedback was music to my ears, "It sounds like me!"
A simple framework helps every time.
